Abstract. In this lecture, I will give an elementary introduction to two different research fields, scientific computing and machine learning, and discuss about their relationships. For scientific computing, I will focus on numerical methods for partial differential equations, especially finite element and multigrid methods. For machine learning, I will focus on deep neural networks, especially convolutional neural networks. I will report some recent mathematical results to illustrate the connections of these two different fields and motivate some interesting cross-fertilization research topics.
